10th Feb 2025 5:29PMSki field Safety Service Ranger staff used this building as the focal point for mid-week ski patrol operations between 1966 and 1986. The Chief Ranger assigned the role of Safety Services Ranger to a different Ranger each year. All were expected to work with the ski field operator Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (who had no responsibility for ski accident care) and the volunteer Ski Patrol. This building included a public shelter and a clinic. There were also safety service depots at the National Downhill and at the base of Knoll Ridge as well as at Iwikau village where the Ambulance was based. Rangers and ski patrollers mostly were based at Knoll ridge which was as high on the ski field as possible so as to efficiently cover the maximum area should a lift require to be evacuated, or a casualty treated.
