3rd Feb 2025 9:03PMDay skiing on the Tasman Glacier Neve became popular in the late 1960's. Films, such as "Wild September Snow" produced by the National Film Unit and released in the Northern hemisphere were influential. Ski planes operated by Mt Cook Airlines provided the means of access however when demand was high skiers were at risk of becoming stranded at high altitudes without shelter should weather and snow conditions deteriorate. It was decided that a Ski Patrol should be present in the upper Neve so as to provide a safety service in the event of accidents or should conditions require skier evacuation. Radio communications were a critical part of the service. Bob Ryan designed and installed the emergency radio antenna. Safety services were provided 'on the day' by other Rangers according to a roster.
