DescriptionIn 1974, when Ngauruhoe was erupting I was going to take a primary school group up to Ketetahi springs. But with the ash blowing that way and being unpleasant to walk in, we took the children up Pukekaikiore instead. Pukekaikiore is a small hill about 2km from Ngauruhoe's summit. Whilst we sat at the top the mountain went very quiet, then suddenly there was a big bang and it erupted throwing ash high into the air and rocks tumbling down the side. The summit seemed very close!
