DescriptionWally Sander's recollections:
In May I moved back down to the edge of the park at Rahiri Lodge which had originally been the Gate Keepers lodge when a toll was charged for entering the park and using the road at something like 2 shillings and 6 pence per car and 1 shilling per person park entrance fee.

Rahiri Lodge when I moved in was in a disgraceful state with smoke blackened ceilings from the wood fire and old coal range, wall paper in tatters, interior brick wall with big cracks and rotten wooden sink bench etc. The board allowed me to buy paint and a second hand formica bench top and I set to in my own time at nights and weekends to do the place up, from my own pocket buying lino and second hand carpet for the floors, plastering up the brick work and painting. It turned out to be a comfortable base for the next 4 years and it was from Rahiri that I met and married Margaret in October 1961 and our son Dean was born in March 1963.
