Biography

Neil started as a Ranger at Tongariro National Park in 1975. This led to him holding various positions including Assistant Chief Ranger Tongariro and Senior Reserves Ranger for Westland Reserves, based at Hokitika. In DOC, he was Deputy Regional Manager West Coast and Conservator Hawke’s Bay and Nelson/Marlborough. In his ranger work on the West Coast, in addition to operational management, he was involved in a number of land use studies relating to national park investigations and crown land generally. Neil also participated in a ranger exchange with the Peak District National Park, England. Over his time as a ranger on the West Coast he experienced the contentious land use debate and wider conservation campaign which ultimately led to the establishment of DOC.
