Collection SummaryMy career as a ranger with the Department of Lands and Survey began in November 1975 when I was appointed to a ranger vacancy at Whakapapa, Tongariro National Park. In January 1979 while still holding a ranger position I was granted a State Services Study Award to undertake an MSc Resource Management at the Centre for Environmental Sciences (Lincoln College-Canterbury University). This was followed by another year in Christchurch convening a small team producing a management strategy and plans for unalienated crown land of the Southern Alps. A condition of the study award was that I would be appointed to any vacancies available on completion which led to being appointed Senior Ranger Reserves, Hokitika District Office in December 1981.
In 1985 I took on a four month ranger exchange with the Peak District National Park England, and on return to New Zealand in October 1985 I was appointed Senior Ranger Whakapapa District to begin my second stint at Tongariro National Park. This lead on to becoming Assistant Chief Ranger Tongariro National Park until the establishment of DOC in 1987, when I was appointed Deputy Regional Manager, West Coast.
