From Boots on the Ground to University and Global Conservation 2000
SubjectMasters Course at the University Wales- Aberystwyth
DateBetween 1st January 1998 and 31st December 2000
StoryFrom Boots on the Ground to Global Conservation: A Ranger’s MSc Journey
“Biodiversity conservation isn’t just about nature — it’s about people, power, and the courage to stay and totally engage at the table.”When I began as a basic grade ranger in Tongariro National Park, I thought conservation was mostly about the outdoors: fixing tracks, building huts, monitoring ecosystems and wildlife, and helping visitors safely enjoy our special places. That work was — and still is — deeply meaningful. But over time, I came to understand that protected areas are shaped as much by people as by forests, rivers, or kea calls echoing through the valleys.
Seeing the Bigger Picture
As my roles evolved, so did the conversations I found myself in. No longer just about landscapes and species, they increasingly touched on communities, livelihoods, politics, and equity. I saw how decisions made in Wellington — or even further afield — could ripple through local ecosystems. And I learned that the success of any intervention often hinged on whether local voices were heard and respected.
To contribute more effectively, I realised I needed to broaden my knowledge. Conservation wasn’t just ecological science — it was also social science, economics, law, culture, and politics. That realisation led me to pursue a Master of Science in Protected Area Management through distance learning with the University of Wales.
Learning While Doing
The MSc programme was designed for practitioners like me — people working in the field who needed to bridge the gap between boots-on-the-ground experience and policy-level decision-making. The coursework was rigorous and relevant, covering everything from biodiversity assessment and adaptive management to environmental governance and community co-management.
Balancing study with full-time work — whether in New Zealand or Papua New Guinea — was no small feat. I often found myself up at 3 or 4 a.m., squeezing in reading and assignments before heading out into the field. The thesis phase was especially demanding, testing my perseverance and time management like never before.
A Welsh Interlude – University of Wales - Aberystwyth
Figure 1Part of the main façade of the University of Wales campus - Aberystwyth
Figure 2 University of Wales Aberystwyth - a big campus with lots of disciplines
One unexpected gift was the opportunity to spend time at the University of Wales campus. I took unpaid leave and travelled at my own expense to access library resources and focus on my thesis: The Development and Application of Biodiversity Conservation Approaches with Particular Emphasis on Lessons from Papua New Guinea and Lao PDR.
My supervisor, Dr Liz Hughes,[1] was blunt: submit soon, or risk not completing the degree. I pushed through, submitted a draft, and — to my surprise — received a “A+” mark. That moment reaffirmed the value of integrating field experience with academic rigour.
Figure 3 Masters of Science degree in Protected Landscape Management - a piece of paper that was the culmination of years of experience and sweat equity.
Bridging Worlds
While at the University of Wales campus, I was invited to organise and present seminars and share experiences from my work in Papua New Guinea — where conservation often meant navigating corruption, political interference, and the influence of powerful logging interests. For many students, these realities were eye-opening. Their understanding of conservation had been largely theoretical. Bringing lived experience will into the classroom helped bridge the gap between ideals and the complex, contested nature of real-world conservation.
Relaxation
While in Aberystwyth we stayed at a small flat in the old buildings just off the beach.
Figure 4 The tiny flat we rented for a couple of months while I used to the University library to research my thesis was ideal. It was close to a local grocery shop, movie theatre and most i importantly a local pub where we could go and yarn with local people.
To use the as a going with you sorting and will get me to get working/
Figure 5 From our base in Aberystwyth it was easy to get out of the town and cycle into the countryside. Some weekends we went on other adventures such as to the Lakes District and Anglesey.
People at the Heart
My journey reinforced a truth I now carry everywhere: conservation only endures when local voices are central. Global science offers tools, but it’s the knowledge, identity, and aspirations of tangata whenua and community groups that give conservation its soul.
Equity isn’t optional — it’s foundational. Around the world, those with the most to lose are often the least heard. If we don’t engage with politics, politics will shape conservation for us.
Taking the Work Global
The MSc gave me a platform to expand my horizons and work across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Despite different landscapes and languages, many of the same principles applied such as :
- Projects succeed when relationships are strong and inclusive.
- Conservation gains depend on fairness and shared benefit.
- External expertise only works when guided by local leadership.
What I Carry With Me
Looking back, a few lessons stand out:
- Good conservation is built on relationships.
- Local knowledge and equity are essential.
- Learning never stops — it’s a lifelong process.
- Ranger skills travel — perhaps more than we expect.
- A solid academic foundation builds confidence to work across systems.
My MSc didn’t take me away from being a ranger — it actually helped to deepen my understanding of wide range of dimensions our profession requires.
