1977-1979 and 1986-1989 in Nepal for the United Nations. Bruce was appointed as an advisor to the Nepal Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation to provide technical support during the entablement of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park
Bruce is a globally recognised leader in protected area management. His experience has been gained over 25 years in the New Zealand National Park Service (Ranger, Senior Ranger, Chief Ranger Tongariro National Park, Conservator Tairawhiti), Pacific Island countries including Papua New Guinea and Samoa, as well as South and East Asia (Nepal, Bhutan, Philippines, Lao PDR, Malaysia), Thailand, China and Timor Leste.
In 2014, while working on an assignment with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP), he was awarded the Director General’s Excellence Award for “designing and implementing rapid biodiversity surveys in three Pacific Island countries”.
In 2019, he was awarded the Lincoln University Alumni International Medal, recognising “individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their chosen field of expertise and have brought credit to Lincoln University through their achievements in a country other than New Zealand”.
