Fox Glacier

DescriptionThe Fox Glacier is South Westland's other iconic glacier. Known by local Maori as Te Moeka o Tuawe which means 'the final resting place of chief Tuawe who perished in the mountains. Great ice clad mountains dominate the mountain-scape of Fox Glacier where vast snowfields combine their mass to drag this river of ice from the icefields down into the sub tropical forests. When first described by early colonial explorers the ice of Te Moeka o Tuawe occupied almost all of the valley from which it has now retreated. Tourism, guiding and hospitality were also available to adventurous travellers who made the arduous journey to Fox Glacier. The combination of icefields, high peaks and forested landscapes of the region were incorporated into the Westland Tai Poutini National Park at the time of establishment in 1960.
