Description This is a collection of photographs of tracks and bridges built during the Lands and Survey era by rangers and park staff.
Rangers and Park work staff had to be practical people able to turn a hand to many tasks and operate machinery and tools safely and competently. Many of these skills were learned in the field under the supervision of experienced colleagues while others, in typical Kiwi fashion, were self-taught. Track construction and bridge building was hard work requiring skill and stamina, usually in wet and demanding conditions in remote areas. Innovation was a key factor in the design and construction of tracks, boardwalks and bridges built throughout Parks and Reserves. Many of the construction projects that were undertaken might now be described as ingenious. Some were grand constructions, but the great majority were simple and fit for purpose built on a limited budget with limited resources.
