DescriptionThe Franz Josef Park HQ/Visitor Centre under demolition. I took this photo a couple of weeks back so it will have disappeared completely by now. It has been in a sorry state for a few years, abandoned quite suddenly, due to earthquake risk apparently. Its decrepit state was sad for old rangers to see. So probably just as well that it has now finally gone.

Designed by Gordon Nichols in the late '60's after he returned from a Churchill Fellowship trip to USA parks. It incorporated both the USA traditional park style, with large open public space, as well as the Kiwi A frame trend of the late '60's and '70's. Apparently it was a bugger of a building to work in, especially for the chief ranger in his office right at the top (due to the heat an noise coming up from the visitor areas below.
