At Wally Sander’s instigation, Gwenda Atkinson produced the very first issue of Te Namu in January 1977. Te Namu was produced about every three or four months and became a great vehicle for recording activities actions foulups and events of interest in Fiordland. Gwenda produced them for a number of years

The Tark for the Park cartoon character developed in one of the early Te Namu publications. I drew cartoons for Te Namu and somewhere along the way a cartoon takahe developed. He was called Tark of the Park and quickly became an unofficial spokesman and commentator on events and happenings. He later gained a family with Aurora as his partner and Tussock and Tiller as his chicks. During the centennial of national parks in New Zealand, 1987, he was adopted as mascot for the year and made appearances on children's programs such as TVNZ’s Spot On as well as a regular place in the national centennial publication.
