After school and one year at University there, I came to New Zealand (1961) for climbing. I worked at Nasella tussock control, road patching and pylon rigging for NZED. After climbing in the Andes, Himalayas and Antarctica, I got a park assistant’s job at Mount Cook National Park (12 months). I then left, returned as park assistant, then applied for and got Senior Ranger job, mainly on the basis of my climbing experience rather than anything else. In all my travels and climbing I had developed an outdoors liking and I’d always had a feeling that the work I wanted to do was in Parks. I had tried in Canada to get a job in the Wildlife Service. Getting the Mt Cook job suited me down to the ground. I stayed there for 13 years in that position.
