He first started working in NZ as a park assistant / mountaineer at Aoraki Mount Cook in 1974. He took up a ranger position at Nelson Lakes in 1976, and later to Fox Glacier in 1981. When DOC started in 1987 he transferred to Reserve work in Hamilton and retired after 44 years of NZ conservation work in 2018.
In his words he, “had a diverse number of roles and positions in this time, perhaps the strongest continuous links have been People, Birds and Rope Rescue/Work “.
All up including his Australian experiences with the Sydney Rock Climbing Club he was involved with 150 SAR incidents. We can all remember a story Bruce has told. He was a helpful, constructive colleague and a quiet capable leader.

Bruce was a skilled and dedicated Ranger who contributed much to our profession. I'm aware of at least one life saved following a serious climbing accident by virtue of Bruce's skill and steady nerve. He had a million stories ready to be unleashed on the unwary. My self included. Bruce was a valued colleague during our time working together in Tai Poutini/Westland National Park.
