Biography

After Gordon Atkinson's retirement (from Egmont National Park) the new Chief Ranger Kerry Mawhinney took up his appointment in November 1968 where he was to stay until promotion as Chief Ranger of Tongariro National Park in December 1974.

Kerry had a similar background to a number of other rangers as he started his working life as a civil engineering cadet. After deciding that university life and a career as a professional engineer was not for him he worked as an engineering assistant and draughtsman. Five years later in 1961 he made a major change when he joined the Forest Service as a hunter working in Nelson, Harihari and Queenstown on recreational facility development and wild animal control. Prior to appointment to Egmont National Park he was based at Queenstown as ranger in charge of the Southern Lakes District.
