Firstly as Park work staff then being appointed as a Trainee in April 1st 1960. Most of his Trainee work was at Arthur’s Pass and included building, track work, possum control, shooting etc. He actually just worked with the others but at a cheaper rate, two pound thirteen and six a week.
"Not being an Authority Trainee the Park Board issued me with a certificate to say I had completed a three-year course of instruction, which was approved by the National Park Authority. I became a Grade 2 assistant ranger. I refused to attend the Lincoln College course, which was not well received by those in authority. When Lands and Survey became DOC in 1987 I took my redundancy. I had spent 26 years in the Park service, all in the same Park."
John was seconded to Fiordland National park for a year in 1961.
John was promoted to Senior Ranger, Arthur's Park in August 1968.
