He took two years leave of absence to visit Canada, where he worked as a full-time ski Patroller at Sunshine Village in Banff National Park.
In August 1972 he was appointed Ranger at Tongariro National Park, stationed at Whakapapa.
At Whakapapa he first worked with Rex Mossman who was Safety Services Ranger at the time. In subsequent years his responsibilities were mostly focused on the development of ski-field safety services where he introduced full-time ski rescue services at the Whakapapa Ski Field.
He held senior roles at Tongariro and in Westland until he was appointed Chief Ranger of Westland National Park in 1984.
Later roles included District Conservator in South Westland as well as Manager of Conservation Biodiversity and Use in Hokitika.
While in Westland he led the design and implementation of the South Westland Eco-Tourism Strategy and co-authored several papers on wilderness management and protection in Te Wai Pounamu World Heritage Area. In this role he represented DOC at UNESCO World Heritage and World Wilderness Congress forums. His work in Westland Conservancy included the development of the West Coast Marine Protection Forum which resulted in five marine reserves being declared.
He retired from DOC in 2008 and has spent the past 20 years as a travel consultant and joint owner of Silk Road Adventures, offering village-based eco-tourism projects in Northern Pakistan and small group tours throughout Central Asia and the silk routes beyond (www.silkroad.co.nz).
