In Arthur's words:

"I told him my first introduction to cutting logs was as a youngster, weighing perhaps 8 stone, helping my father, weighing then probably 19 or 20 stone, cutting kauri head logs for gate timber. He used a nine-foot drag crosscut saw and he always got on the lower creek side, which meant I was pulling up hill. He always sharpened the saw so it would bring out these beautiful curls of wood shavings from the cut.

His usual comment to me was that he didn't mind me "riding the saw" but don't drag your bloody feet. I wasn't happy as a cross cutter."
