After a year travelling overseas he returned to a position as Wellington Reserves Ranger. This position covered the Chatham Islands and included overseeing Kapiti Island and the Whanganui River Reserves. Rex was then appointed to a role in Western Samoa to oversee their newly established national park service and to train staff.
On returning to New Zealand he moved to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park before being appointed Chief Ranger of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park. He retired from national park service in 1990.
