DescriptionThis booklet is dedicated to the Ngati Kurauia people of Tokaanu with special thanks for all their help. It is not intended to be the definitive text on Tokaanu which is a fascinating subject worthy of numerous books.

The Maori people of Ngati Tuwharetoa have lived in settlements around Lake Taupo from the 16th century. Their forbears came to New Zealand by canoe from Polynesia and soon moved from the Bay of Plenty, on the East Coast, inland to the central North Island.

When Europeans came to this area in the 1830s they noted there were about 2000 inhabitants around the lake, with about 300 people living at Tokaanu. These were the Ngati Kurauia, a subtribe of Ngati Tuwharetoa. Last edited by: Barbara Thomson
