The Future of Tongariro National Park Beech Forests
Expand/collapse
Details
EditorWarwick B Silvester
Victoria Watt
Date4-5 March 1982
DescriptionProceedings of a Symposium held at Tongariro National Park Headquarters 4-5 Mach 1982.
Forward:
Studies of the ecology of mountain beech by DSIR Botany Division staff in Tongariro National Park were in progress in the early 1960s when concern about accelerating mortality in mature trees was expressed. A few years later the Department of Lands and Survey requested the assistance of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in the identification of possible causes of tree death. Work by FRI pathology and entomology groups began with the marking of plots and assessment of damage in several areas of the park. Further involvement from FRI began 3 years ago.
The result of an informal meeting between FRI members and the Chief Ranger at the park during Easter 1981 was a suggestion that it would be beneficial for both groups to discuss the work already done and prospects for future research into beech ecology. A suggestion that a prelimi- nary refresher day to familiarise park/ranger staff with current ecological ideas was abandoned since it was felt that this could be done along with a more specific discussion of beech mortality. It was then decided that the attendance at the proposed seminar should be widened to include all groups associated with beech ecology and mortality problems in native forest species throughout the country. Professor Warwick Silvester was invited to chair a meeting which was to be arranged under the auspices of the Department of Lands and Survey as a Tongariro National Park seminar. A programme and list of invited participants was decided jointly between Professor Silvester, the Chief Ranger, and FRI staff. The seminar was arranged for 4-5 March 1982 at park headquarters.
The seminar aimed to bring together people responsible for the park with people who had a
thorough knowledge of the present state of beech forests. This would allow possible predictions of the future of the forests and a discussion of future research requirements. An important objective for park staff was to communicate the seminar discussion to those members of the public showing concern for the beech forests. It was felt that emphasis during the meeting should rest on a broad discussion of beech ecology and should not be restricted to the mortality problem. The title 'The Future of Tongariro National Park Beech Forests' was therefore chosen.
Interest in the seminar was widespread as shown by the numbers and enthusiasm of the participants who came from an area spanning Auckland to Westland. Further interest was added by the presence of Grant Gerrish from the University of Hawaii.
